Last Monday we had our field trip to the Flynn Theater.  We all enjoyed seeing "Sylvester and the Magic  Pebble"!  Here are a few snapshots of our class as we waited ever so patiently for the show to begin!

 We sat up in the balcony which was pretty exciting!  As you can see, our seats were quite comfy!

 We have just wrapped up our first unit of study in writing called, "Launching Writing Workshop".  Students were asked to select one piece of writing from their folders that they would like to share at our Publishing Party.

 Here you will see our friends as they  "fix up" and "fancy up" their selected piece.

 Students rotated around the classroom and read their published piece to friends.

 After we shared our writing, we enjoyed popcorn and juice.

 Math Explorations:  Using base ten blocks to build.

 Exploring geometric shapes with geoboards and rubber bands.

Writing Workshop:  following a brief mini-lesson led by me, writers discuss their writing ideas with a partner and then begin their own writing.

Our mini-lesson on this particular day was about how writers tell stories within their illustrations and then expand on with the story through text.  If you look closely you will see some very detailed illustrations here!

Reading Workshop:  We all had the opportunity to choose independent reading spots.  Some readers like to sit on the rug . . .

while others like to sit at a table.

We read for lots of different purposes.  This reader enjoys the humor in this particular book!

I use the word "teamwork" a lot in class.  This group of boys certainly worked as a team to complete this dinosaur puzzle during free choice time.

Thank you for your patience with my blog!  I will be updating it by the end of this week with photos and text!!  We are off to a great start in first grade and have been super busy learning routines and having fun!
