Solids and Liquids Padlet

The "Padlet" is a fun, technology presentation tool that we learned about this week. We used it to show our new learning about solids and liquids. I asked students to name either a solid or a liquid and then name a property to describe it. Check out the Padlet to see what we learned.

Community Helpers

Students in all first grade classrooms are beginning a new unit of study in social studies--Community Helpers.
On Friday our new Colchester Chief of Police, Jennifer Morrison, and Officer Jeff Fontaine, came to our classrooms to speak about what they do to help keep our Colchester community safe.  As always, first graders were enthusiastic, curious and had a variety of great questions for our guest speakers.  Among other things, they wanted to know what it takes to become a police officer and what a typical day looks like.  Students were curious about the different tools that a police officer is equipped with and whether or not there was a K-9 dog within the department.  They were excited to learn that, yes, there is a K-9 dog and they were able to view a photo of him!  We will continue our Community Helper unit for the next few weeks.  Our studies will include a walking field trip to the Burnham Library as well as the Colchester Fire Station.  I will keep you updated on the dates of these walking trips as soon as the dates are set.  Parents are welcome to join us!!

Self Portraits

Thank you all for coming to Open House! Students were so proud to show you all that they have been working on in school.  We have been learning lots about one another for the past several weeks.  As a culminating project for our All About Me studies, students used paper collage to create these beautiful self portraits.  As you know, they are now hanging in the classroom.  I thought I would post them for you as they will be displayed in the room all year long!
