Spirit Week!

School Spirit Week
This week is School Spirit Week! I will post a few photos of all the fun as the week progresses. Please see the side bar of "Important Dates" for the details. Amidst all the fun, we will continue to work diligently in the classroom!
Last week I read the book, "The Perfect Pet" to the class. It was about a young girl who desparately wanted a pet. She made strong attempts at convincing her parents what the perfect pet might be (dog, cat, horse, bird) and gave valid reasons ''why'' for each attempt. This story was a lead in to our new genre of writing which is opinion writing. First graders are learning how to state thier opinion and then follow it up with several reasons "why". We will be putting our opionions into writing this week!
In reading, students have been listening to Narrative Non-Fiction. This type of text reads like a story yet is factual and true. You could ask your child about the following stories, Nubs, The true story of a Mutt, a Marine, and a Miracle, Owen and Mzee, or our most recent Winter's Tail. The students have been captivated by these inspirational stories.
We are well into Unit 8 in our EveryDay Math lessons. Students have been reviewing counting coins as well as place value. The new material in this unit includes fractions. We will continue our explorations with fractions this week.
In social studies, our Places in Our World unit has taken us to Mexico! Students have learned about geography, history, celebrations, and the people. This week we will learn about animals that are native to Mexico.
